The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz officially kicks off today, 15 September, 2016 at the Sandton Convention Centre. The festival will see over 35 acts by various famous jazz musicians take on the 4 stages to entertain jazz enthusiasts over three days.
This year’s lineup has been described as ‘steller’, and will feature the likes of Grammy award winner Bill Champlin, America jazz giant Gerald Albright and South Africa’s much loved artist, Jonathan Butler. Also, the much talented US pianist Bob James, the boss of tenor sax, Houston Person, talented drummer, Kendrick Scott, Spain based musician Deborah Carter, South African favorites like Judy Siphuma, Sibongile Khumalo, Lira and Ringo Madlingozi are among those who will perform.
The different music acts will spread across the 4 stages: Dinaledi, Diphala, Conga and Mbira with some artists performing on two days.
Sounds of Love (SOL) is a group made up of friends and they are 4 time Grammy Award winners. They hope to bring together a “unique blend of joy, excitement and love” to the stage. Their love long ‘I’ve Got the Next Dance’ topped the Billboard charts and you can listen to it here.

Ester Rada is a young singer and songwriter with with Ethiopian roots. Her heritage is reflected in her unique blend of music and musical instruments that she uses and her sound.

Alune Wade is a Senegalese jazz musician that is a must watch. This virtuous bass player and singer sounds a lot like Youssou N’Dour. He grew up in a musical family and shuttles between Africa and Cuba which is reflected in music. Listen to ‘Sago’.
